We identify the best treatment plan to improve blood flow, increase your body’s ability to heal wounds, and prevent amputations when possible. If ulcers do not adequately heal with standard treatment, additional modalities may be required. We define advanced wound care therapies as interventions used when standard wound care has failed. Therapies includes collagen products, biological dressings, biological skin equivalents keratinocytes, platelet-derived growth factor platelet-rich plasma (PRP), silver products, intermittent pneumatic compression therapy (IPC), negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) and topical oxygen.
The use of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) for chronic non healing and diabetic wounds has increased in popularity over the past decade. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a method of drawing out fluid and infection from a wound to help it heal. A special dressing (bandage) is sealed over the wound and a gentle vacuum pump is attached. This therapy involves a special dressing (bandage), tubing, a negative pressure device, and canister to collect fluids.
A total contact cast is a cast used to treat ulcers (serious, deep sores) on a person’s foot. The cast is used to heal diabetic foot ulcers by distributing weight along the entire plantar aspect (sole) of the foot. It is applied in such a way to intimately contact the exact contour of the foot; hence the name, "total contact cast." The cast relieves the pressure on the prominent areas of the foot, permitting the ulcers to heal. The cast should be applied in such a way that the patient can remain mobile during the treatment of the ulcer.
